A Japanese consortium has launched the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R).
The facility is a 10MW level hydrogen production unit, the largest in the world.
FH2R uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen. Renewable generation is often subject to fluctuation. FH2R adjusts to the fluctuating supply and demand in the power grid to optimise renewable hydrogen production, taking power from a 20MW solar farm next door.
The consortium includes: the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. and Iwatani Corporation.
